Violin Teaching

  • Anyone – Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, aged 6-60, I have experience teaching most demographics, including children with special needs such as ADHD and autism.
  • Anywhere – I usually cycle to students’ houses if they live in/near the Bishopston area.I am also open to giving remote lessons via Skype or Zoom if you happen to live far away.
  • Anyway – whether its playing for fun or pursuing it seriously, I always keep an open-minded approach to teaching. Over the years I have built a collection of technical exercises, arrangements and games that can all benefit the student’s way of learning.

Teaching Principles

My teaching focuses on building technique from the start which can seem arduous, however one can learn in a relaxed way by practising slowly and regularly. Working on one or two aspects, such as a tricky passage or mastering their bow arm is more efficient than playing through a piece several times.

As someone who enjoys academic music and composition, I often create bespoke exercises for my students to help with specific techniques and areas of improvement. These are emailed to parents to print off, and many can be found on my Violin Resources page.

It goes without saying that the way in which people absorb information does differ from person to person, therefore I like to maintain an open-minded and unique approach to the individual’s style of learning. Teaching in a variety of ways improves my skill as a teacher and musician as it pushes me to think differently and has helped me build my own library of resources that can been tailored to any student.

Musical appreciation is something I try to incorporate in my teaching. I will always encourage children to listen to various composers and different styles of music outside their lessons to reinforce what a joy music-making can be. This also helps prompt discussions about the sort of music they wish to play in future.
