What’s in my violin case?

Beside holding the usual items – the violin, bow and shoulder rest – my violin case has a compartment on the left (currently covered by my music scarf) which can hold a handful of accessories.

From left to right – peg paste, a mute in a box, a large practice mute, hair bands, a pencil, mini perfume, a penny and rosin

Here are the uses for each accessory, pictured above:

  • Peg Paste is applied to the violin pegs to loosen them up and stop them clicking whilst also preventing them from slipping . This makes it easier to tune the violin.
  • The small circular mute in the green box can be attached to the strings and placed on to the bridge to stop the vibrations, this buffs the sound.
  • The larger practice mute buffers the sound even more.
  • The hairbands are there to tie my hair up and stop it getting in the way.
  • The small tube of sample perfume is used to clean the strings every now and again, from layers of rosin.
  • Rosin is used to rub on the bow and make it sticky so that it creates a sound through friction when pulled along the strings.
  • I like to use a coin to scratch the surface of rosin and create dust. This makes it easier to get rosin on the violin.
